Angama Mara

Few lodges in East Africa own a view the way Angama Mara does. The lodge sits on community land on the Oloololo Escarpment, roughly 1,000 feet above the floor of the Mara Triangle, and every one of its thirty tented suites is built around that fact: an eleven metre glass frontage, a wide private deck and a sightline that runs uninterrupted across the plains to the horizon. The property is deliberately split into two camps of fifteen suites, North and South, each self contained with its own pavilion, infinity edge pool, dining deck and firepit, which keeps the feel intimate even when the lodge is full. Interiors by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens pair canvas and timber with bold reds and pale linen, and the tents were built by Jan Allan, Kenya's best known canvas maker. Beyond the suites there is a photographic studio with professional bodies and lenses available to guests, a beadwork studio run with women from the local community, a safari shop and a working kitchen garden. Drives drop down the escarpment into the Mara Triangle, the reserve's least crowded sector, and the lodge is a short transfer from Kichwa Tembo airstrip.
