About this stay
Malaika Migration Camp is the mobile arm of Malaika Camps and Lodges, an Arusha-based Tanzanian collection that also runs permanent camps at Seronera, Ndutu, and the Mara River. Rather than sit in one place, the camp strikes and re-pitches twice a year to stay alongside the wildebeest herds. From roughly November to April it operates as Malaika Ndutu Migration Camp on the southern plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, close to Ndutu airstrip and Lake Ndutu, for the calving season. From around June to October it becomes Malaika Mara River Migration Camp at Kogatende in the northern Serengeti, within reach of the river crossings.
The camp is deliberately classic rather than opulent. Sixteen standard canvas tents stand on simple plinths under green flysheets, with mosquito-netted beds, en-suite bathrooms, flush toilets, and hot showers. Interiors lean on timber, canvas, and lantern light rather than heavy furnishing, which keeps the camp light enough to move.
Shared life happens in a canvas lounge and bar and a long dining tent with mesh walls open to the bush. Meals are freshly prepared between game drives, with gluten-free and vegan cooking handled on request, and bush breakfasts, bush lunches, and sundowners available at extra cost.
What distinguishes it is the trade it makes. Guests give up the polish of a permanent lodge and gain proximity, waking within striking distance of whichever act of the migration is playing out that month.
