Lemosho Route - Best Kilimanjaro Route | 7-8 Days

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the best overall route up Kilimanjaro. 7-8 days through pristine western rainforest with 90%+ success rate and excellent acclimatization.

Lemosho Route: The Best Route Up Kilimanjaro

If you have the time and budget for an 8-day climb, the Lemosho Route is the finest way to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the west through pristine, rarely visited rainforest, Lemosho offers the best acclimatization profile of any popular route, stunning and varied scenery across all five ecological zones, and summit success rates exceeding 90%.

The first two days on Lemosho are its signature advantage. While other routes start in forests criss-crossed by hundreds of daily visitors, the western approach sees a fraction of the traffic. You trek through ancient rainforest in near-solitude before joining the main Machame Route at the Shira Plateau. From Shira onward, the route follows the same proven path as Machame - Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga, Barafu, and summit.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (8 Days)

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp / Mti Mkubwa (2,780m)

Distance: 7 km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Elevation Gain: 680m

After registering at Londorossi Gate, a short drive takes you to the Lemosho trailhead at Lemosho Glades. The trail enters magnificent montane rainforest - tall, moss-draped trees, a dense understorey of ferns and wildflowers, and the calls of exotic birds filling the canopy. This is some of the most pristine forest on Kilimanjaro, with the chance of spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Big Tree Camp takes its name from a giant fig tree near the campsite.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira Ridge / Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)

Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours | Elevation Gain: 725m

The trail continues through the upper rainforest before emerging into the heath and moorland zone. The transition is dramatic - dense canopy gives way to open sky, giant heathers, and sweeping views. You climb through increasingly sparse vegetation to reach the edge of the vast Shira Plateau. Camp is set on the plateau rim with views back toward the western descent and forward toward the massif of Kibo, Kilimanjaro's main volcanic cone.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,505m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Distance: 7 km | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain: 335m

A gentler day crossing the Shira Plateau, one of the most atmospheric landscapes on Kilimanjaro. The plateau is an ancient caldera - the collapsed remnant of one of the mountain's three original volcanic peaks. The terrain is open moorland dotted with giant groundsels and lobelias. Walking is relatively easy and the moderate altitude gain makes this an excellent acclimatization day. You may see eland on the plateau.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: +790m / -670m

The key acclimatization day. From the Shira Plateau, the route ascends through increasingly barren alpine desert to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres. This imposing volcanic rock formation is where many climbers first feel the altitude - headaches and shortness of breath are common. After lunch, you descend steeply into the Barranco Valley, passing through a surreal landscape of giant groundsels silhouetted against glaciers. Sleeping at 3,960 metres after reaching 4,630 metres during the day supercharges your acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain: 75m (net)

The day starts with the Barranco Wall - a steep, hands-on scramble up a 257-metre rock face that is one of the most memorable sections of the entire climb. Despite its imposing appearance, the wall is a scramble rather than a technical climb. From the top, the trail crosses several ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp in the Karanga Valley. This is the last reliable water point before the summit.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Distance: 4 km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Elevation Gain: 638m

A short day to the high camp. The trail traverses rocky alpine desert to reach Barafu Camp on its exposed ridge. You arrive by early afternoon, eat an early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit attempt. Sleep is difficult at this altitude - the thin air, anticipation, and cold conspire against rest. Do your best to stay warm and calm.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Distance: 13 km | Hiking Time: 12-16 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: +1,222m / -2,795m

The summit push begins around midnight. Six to seven hours of climbing on steep scree in biting cold brings you to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. The sunrise from this elevation is unforgettable. Another 45 minutes along the rim delivers you to Uhuru Peak - the Roof of Africa. After celebrating and capturing photographs, you descend all the way past Barafu and down to Mweka Camp in the forest zone.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Elevation Loss: 1,460m

Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate, tip your crew, and transfer back to Moshi.
