Arrive Fort Portal - Afternoon Nature Walk

Arrive in Fort Portal — a charming highland town at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains — by road from Kampala (5 hours) or domestic flight. Transfer to your forest lodge near Kibale. Afternoon guided nature walk along Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run boardwalk trail through papyrus swamp and tropical forest. Red colobus monkeys crash through the treetops, grey-cheeked mangabeys whoop from the canopy, and the birding is extraordinary — great blue turaco, black-and-white casqued hornbill, and papyrus gonolek among the highlights.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

You report to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre by 7:30am. The ranger briefing covers tracking etiquette: maintain 8 metres from the chimps, no flash photography, stay quiet and low. Then you enter the forest. The canopy closes overhead and the sounds of the forest swallow you — cicadas, distant bird calls, the creak of branches. Your tracker reads the signs: knuckle prints in the mud, freshly discarded fruit. Then you hear it — the rising whoop of a pant-hoot, answered by another, then another, building to a climax that reverberates through the trees. You find them. A family group feeding in a fig tree, infants swinging wildly, a male drumming on a buttress root. One hour that rewrites your understanding of what it means to be a primate.
