Kibale Primate Experience - 3 Days

Transfer to Fort Portal and your forest lodge. Afternoon immersion at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-managed trail system that is one of Uganda's best birding sites and home to eight primate species. Red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey are virtually guaranteed. The community guides are knowledgeable and passionate; their enthusiasm is infectious.

The highlight of the trip: a full day with a chimpanzee community being habituated to human presence. You join the research team at 6am, entering the forest as dawn filters through the canopy. For up to six hours, you follow the group as they wake in their nests, descend to forage, groom, play, argue, reconcile, and travel. You watch a mother teach her infant to use a stick to extract termites. You see juveniles wrestle. You hear the thunderous pant-hoot chorus that announces the group's movement. Six hours. Thirteen species of primate. One forest. Unforgettable.

Morning standard chimpanzee tracking — a different experience from yesterday's habituation. The one-hour encounter with a fully habituated community is often closer and more relaxed, the chimps completely indifferent to your presence. After the trek, a final forest walk targeting the smaller primates — L'Hoest's monkey, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus — before departure. Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park (2 hours south) or return to Fort Portal for onward travel.
