Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m)
Plunge into dense, dark rainforest on the steepest first day of any route (1,340m gain). Narrow ridge trail through primeval, moss-draped trees to camp near a historic rock overhang.

Another steep day climbing from forest through heath and moorland. Relentless upward trajectory with 1,020m gain. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the Western Breach wall and glaciers.

Scale the Barranco Wall scramble, then cross the Karanga Valley. A moderate day after two intense climbs, providing some acclimatization benefit.

Short ascent through alpine desert to high camp. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.
