Murchison Falls Nile Explorer - 4 Days

Depart Kampala and stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a walking safari to track white rhinos — Uganda's only wild rhinos, reintroduced as part of a conservation programme. Continue into Murchison Falls National Park. Late afternoon hike to the top of the falls, where the Nile forces itself through a gap narrower than most hotel rooms and detonates 43 metres below.

Early morning chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, a mahogany-rich forest reserve on the park's southern boundary. Budongo shelters around 600 chimpanzees, and the habituated Kaniyo Pabidi community offers excellent sightings. Afternoon Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls — three hours of hippos, crocs, elephants, and kingfishers building to the thundering crescendo of the falls themselves.

A full day on the northern bank — the closest thing Uganda has to a Serengeti landscape. Early morning is prime time for lions and leopards before the heat pushes them into shade. Rothschild's giraffe move across the palm-studded savannah with their distinctive stiff-legged grace. You stop for a bush lunch under a fig tree, listening to the distant grunt of hippos in the Nile. Afternoon drive focuses on the delta area where the Victoria Nile enters Lake Albert — prolific for waterbirds and elephant.

A dawn boat cruise offers the river in a different mood — mist rising, fish eagles calling, hippos still settled in their nighttime pods. The light at this hour turns the water gold. After breakfast at the lodge, transfer south toward Kampala, or continue to Fort Portal for Kibale chimpanzee trekking.
