Murchison Falls Safari - 3 Days

Depart Kampala northwest, passing through the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary with a chance to track reintroduced white rhinos on foot — the only place in Uganda where this is possible. Continue to Murchison Falls, arriving in time for a late afternoon hike to the top of the falls. Stand on the rock lip and watch the entire Nile compress to a seven-metre torrent that blasts into the cauldron below. The spray soaks you. The ground trembles. A permanent rainbow arcs through the mist.

Morning boat cruise upstream to the base of the falls. For three hours the Nile narrows, and the wildlife intensifies with every bend — hippo pods in every bay, Nile crocodiles on every sandbank, elephants knee-deep in the shallows, kingfishers diving. The falls appear around the final bend as a wall of white water and thunder. Cross the Nile at Paraa for an afternoon game drive on the northern bank: open savannah with Rothschild's giraffe, elephant herds, lion, and Jackson's hartebeest.

A dawn game drive catches the predators — lion and leopard — before the day heats up. The golden light on the borassus palms, the herds of kob moving across the plain, the distant roar of the falls carried on the morning air — this is Uganda at its most cinematic. After a lodge breakfast, drive back to Kampala or continue to Kibale for chimpanzee trekking.
