Depart Kampala early, crossing the equator monument for the obligatory photo. The landscape shifts from bustling towns and banana groves to the open rift valley as you approach the park. After checking into your safari lodge, an afternoon game drive on the Kasenyi Plains reveals Uganda kob, waterbuck, warthogs, and — if fortune favours — a leopard in the golden hour light. Buffalo herds darken the horizon.

Morning boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. The density of life along these banks defies belief: hippo pods surfacing with explosive snorts, Nile crocodiles longer than your boat, elephants wading knee-deep, and birds — malachite kingfishers, pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, goliath herons — in astonishing numbers. Afternoon chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge: you descend 100 metres into a hidden forest canyon where a habituated chimp community cracks nuts and grooms in the dappled light.
