Wildlife in Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park stands out as a distinctive gem in Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Unlike other parks famous for the Big Five, here the buffalo is the only member commonly seen. The park offers fantastic photo opportunities with large giraffe herds roaming beneath the shadow of Mount Meru, troops of playful monkeys swinging through the trees, and hippos quietly surfacing in the Momella Lakes.

Wildlife Highlights

The park shelters various elusive forest animals rarely seen elsewhere in northern Tanzania. Among these are the Kilimanjaro colobus monkeys, a striking black-and-white species that thrives in the park's forests. Visitors may also spot bushbucks and the unusual antelopes like Harvey’s red duiker and the suni, which prefer the dense primary forest. Large predators in the area include leopards and spotted hyenas, with occasional sightings of servals or African wild cats adding to the diverse wildlife experience.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry season from June to October offers the best conditions for seeing animals. During this time, foliage thins out making it easier to spot wildlife as they gather around reliable water sources. The wet period in April can bring heavy rains, which may make some roads challenging and less accessible for wildlife viewing.
