Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park

The best time to visit Lake Manyara National Park is during the dry season from June to October, with January and February also offering excellent safari conditions. These months provide the best visibility, the easiest wildlife sightings, and the most comfortable weather for game drives. While Lake Manyara is a year-round destination, choosing the right season can have a big impact on what you see and how you experience the park.

Why the Dry Season Is the Ideal Time to Visit

From June to October, Lake Manyara’s vegetation thins out, making it much easier to spot elephants, buffalo, tree-climbing lions, and grazing antelope along the floodplains. Water sources shrink, so animals gather in predictable places, creating some of the park’s most reliable wildlife viewing.

Skies are bright, rain is rare, and mosquitoes are far fewer, which lowers the malaria risk. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, but mornings can be quite chilly, so warm layers are essential for early drives.

January and February bring a shorter dry spell with similar advantages: clear weather, good visibility, and active wildlife. These months offer a great balance between quality sightings and slightly greener landscapes.

Wet Season (November-May)

The wet season breathes life back into Lake Manyara. Rainfall returns in two phases: Short rains (November-December) and Long rains (March-May)

The landscape turns lush and vibrant, and birdlife becomes spectacular, this is one of the best places in Tanzania for birdwatching, especially with migratory species arriving. Wildlife is still present, but animals spread out more because water is abundant everywhere, making sightings a bit less predictable.

March and April are the wettest months, sometimes making some roads slippery or harder to navigate. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended during this period.

The payoff? Fewer tourists, quieter trails, and lower lodge rates, ideal if you prefer a peaceful, budget-friendly trip.

Lake Manyara tends to be busiest from July to March, especially in the northern areas closer to the main gate. April and May are the true low season, with rain keeping visitor numbers down and creating a more intimate safari experience.

Our Expert Recommendation

If your priority is great wildlife viewing, reliable weather, and easy road conditions, aim for June to October or January to February. Travelers who enjoy lush scenery, birdwatching, and quieter safaris will find the wet season rewarding despite the extra rain.

Lake Manyara works beautifully year-round, but knowing how each season changes the park helps you plan the safari you want.
