How to Get to Nyerere National Park

By Air
Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Nyerere. Daily scheduled flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Arusha to the park’s airstrips, such as Mtemere and Beho Beho. Flight durations typically range from 45 minutes to an hour. Several domestic airlines, including Coastal Aviation and Auric Air, provide these routes. By Road
The drive from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere covers approximately 230 kilometers (143 miles) and typically takes around five hours, though travel times can vary due to road conditions. The main access routes are:
- From Dar es Salaam through Mikumi National Park to the Matambwe gate, the primary entrance to the park.
- An alternative scenic route via Morogoro passes through mountain landscapes and villages, ideal for travelers combining Nyerere with other southern Tanzania parks.
- Another route heads through Mloka and Kibiti to the Mtemere gate, taking about seven hours.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) offers a budget-friendly, scenic alternative. The train journey from Dar es Salaam to Matabwe takes about 4 to 5 hours.
