How to Get to Nyungwe National Park

By Air

The main entry point to Rwanda is Kigali International Airport (KGL) located near Kigali city. From Kigali, there is a daily domestic flight operated by RwandAir to Kamembe Airport near Cyangugu, which is about a 1-hour drive away from Nyungwe. Helicopter transfers to Nyungwe are also available through Akagera Aviation, offering a quicker and scenic option.

By Road

Nyungwe is approximately 220 km (137 miles) southwest of Kigali. The drive takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The speed limit on Rwandan roads is 60 km/h. Visitors often explore Nyungwe as part of a 4x4 guided tour around Rwanda.

From other nearby towns, the park is:

• About 2 to 3 hours from Butare (Huye), around 100 km (62 miles)
• About 1.5 hours from Cyangugu (Rusizi), approximately 55 km (34 miles)

The roads are generally well-maintained but can include some rough sections, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for comfort.

Public Transport

Public buses or minibuses run from Kigali to towns like Rusizi and Huye. From these towns, taxis or motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) can be taken to park entrances. Public transport is a budget-friendly option but may take longer, and travelers should plan accordingly.

• The roads offer scenic views with opportunities to stop at historical sites like Nyanza King's Palace and the Gikongoro Genocide Memorial along the way.
