Volcanoes National Park Wildlife

Mountain gorilla tracking is one of the best wildlife experiences in Africa, and Volcanoes National Park is likely the best place to do it. The park has 20 gorilla groups that have been used to humans, with 12 open for visitors to see. Each group lives in its own area and has its own family structure. If you can afford it, booking two gorilla treks on different days is a popular option.

Apart from mountain gorillas, visitors can see groups of golden monkeys. These monkeys only live in the Albertine Rift area and are among the most beautiful monkeys in Africa. They are very calm around people, so you can watch them feed and play close up.

Gorilla trekking is possible all year round with sightings almost guaranteed anytime. Heavy rain can make trails slippery, so trekking is easier in the dry season from June to August, and somewhat in September. January and February are also relatively dry months. During dry seasons, you should book your permits well in advance.
